Plaster Mold Making Course

Reproduction, slip casting, and serial possibilities
This is an intensive 20-hour course designed to teach you how to work with plaster molds for ceramics.

You will discover how this technique vastly expands the possibilities for production, repetition, and formal experimentation in the studio.

The course is designed both for ceramicists in training and for experienced potters who wish to incorporate mold making into their practice.

What you will do

  • Types of plaster and how to choose the right one for your project
  • Correct preparation of the plaster mix
  • Constructing molds (one-part and multi-part)
  • Use and maintenance of the molds
  • Preparation and use of casting slips
  • Altering the cast pieces: adding elements, deforming, and perforating

 

How we will work

  • Choose a source object provided by us or bring your own.
  • The object can be organic or manufactured (preferably rigid and stable).
  • Build your own plaster mold step-by-step.
  • Work with casting slip using pre-dried molds provided by the studio.
  • Learn to intervene and transform the cast pieces.

Course Progression & Future Steps

  • This course can be complemented by: Wheel-throwing, Hand-building, or Sculpture courses, where you can create your own source objects.
  • Raku Course, to explore alternative surface finishes.
  • Development of limited editions based on your own personal prototype.
